The Harder They Fall - Netflix Highlight

The Harder They Fall from director/singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel was quite a fun and dark thrill ride that I didn’t expect from a film about the old west. The film, helmed by a star-studded cast like Regina King, Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, and more, centers on a fictional story about very real black cowboys in history. As far as I know, this is Samuel’s directorial debut for a feature length film, and I must say he does a fantastic job. Not only does he direct the film, but he also does the music for it, which gives so much more texture to what could be just another old west revenge tale, which is essentially what it is. This film is dark when it needs to be and light when the occasion arises, giving us moments to learn a little about these characters and giving the actors a good range to work within. Jonathan Majors is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors and it’s nice to see his ability in a variety of projects, but everyone does a good job in this film which makes the ending all the more impactful. If anything, I would have liked to learn a little more about each character but now that I know names like Nat Love, Rufus Buck, Trudy Smith, and Stagecoach Mary, I can do my own research on these people. You can find this film on Netflix and I would recommend it for sure.
