FX once again surprises me with their innovative choices in television, and their new comedy series Reservation Dogs, from Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, is no exception. The show starring, Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor, follows these four indigenous teenage friends in Oklahoma as they attempt to scrape together enough money to move to California by any means necessary. This series is incredibly refreshing and charming in a way all its own with a wonderful cast of characters that leaves the community feeling realized and authentic. It sports its own unique brand of comedy that feels original and is able to capture both the zaniness and bleakness that these teens experience daily. The whole cast does an excellent job, but Paulina Alexis as Willie Jack is a definite standout for me as her demeanor and line delivery left me laughing throughout all of her episodes thus far. Through the prominent voice of Sterlin Harjo and other indigenous directors, the show perfectly tows the line between real life and that dreamlike endless summer of childhood that makes the show so rich and vibrant. If you haven’t heard of this show or are vaguely interested, I highly recommend you give it a chance. It deserves your attention and I’m excited to see how this show develops and where it goes in future episodes and seasons. Check it out on FX or Hulu.
